What NOT to Do Before Your Cleaner Arrives
If you've never had a professional cleaning service before, there's a very specific anxiety that shows up the day of your first appointment.
It usually sounds something like: should I clean before they get here?
The answer is no. But we'll get to that. Because there are a few things that genuinely help, and knowing the difference between those and the things you absolutely do not need to stress about will make your first experience — and every one after it — a lot better.
Here's the honest guide.
What you do NOT need to do
Let's start here because it's the thing people get most wrong, and getting it wrong means spending energy on the day of your cleaning that you could spend on literally anything else.
You do not need to clean before your cleaner arrives.
This is the number one thing. People scrub their bathrooms, wipe down their counters, and tidy every surface in the house before a professional cleaner shows up. We understand the impulse. It feels awkward to let a stranger see the mess. But it also defeats a significant portion of the purpose of hiring someone.
You hired us to clean your home. Cleaning it yourself first means you paid for a service and then did the job before the service showed up. That's not a deal anyone should want.
The cleaner is not there to judge the state of your home. They have seen everything. They are focused entirely on the work. The mess is not a problem. The mess is the job.
You do not need to organize or tidy everything perfectly.
A basic tidy is helpful — more on that in a moment — but a deep organizational overhaul is not necessary before a cleaning appointment. If there are piles of things on your counter, we'll work around them. If your closets are chaos, we're not going in there unless you've asked us to. You don't need to present a Pinterest-ready home before we arrive.
You do not need to hover or supervise.
A lot of first-time clients feel like they should be present and available to answer questions throughout the appointment. You don't. We've been briefed on your home and your priorities before we arrive. Feel free to go to work, run errands, or sit in another room and ignore us entirely. That's the whole point.
What actually helps
These things are small and they make a real difference in what we can accomplish during your appointment.
Clear the surfaces you want cleaned.
There's a meaningful difference between clutter and mess. Mess is our job. Clutter sitting on a surface we're supposed to clean means we either move everything, clean under it, and put it back — which takes time — or we skip the surface, which means it doesn't get cleaned.
If you have a kitchen counter, a bathroom vanity, or a nightstand you want properly cleaned, taking two minutes to clear it beforehand means we can actually get to it. You don't have to do this for every surface. Just the ones that matter most to you.
Put pets in a comfortable space.
We love pets. Most of our cleaners are pet people. But a dog who's anxious about strangers or a cat who bolts when the vacuum comes out is going to have a better afternoon in a room where the activity isn't happening. It also means we can move through the home more efficiently without working around an animal who'd rather we weren't there.
You know your pet. If they're completely unbothered by new people and vacuum cleaners, feel free to leave them wherever they normally hang out. If they're not, a bedroom or a crate for a few hours is a kindness to everyone.
Make sure we can get in.
This sounds obvious but it comes up more often than you'd think. If you won't be home, we need a way to access the space. A key left with a neighbor, a lockbox code, or a door code — whatever works for your setup. Let us know the plan before the day of the appointment, not the morning of.
Give us your priority list upfront.
Every home has things that matter more than others. Maybe it's the kitchen above everything else. Maybe the bathrooms are the reason you finally booked this. Maybe there's one room that needs more attention than the rest right now.
Tell us before we arrive, not after. We build our approach around your priorities, and knowing them upfront means the time gets allocated where it matters most to you instead of where it might matter most in our cleaning checklist.
For first-time clients especially, this conversation happens before your appointment as part of our intake process. That's intentional. We don't show up and improvise.
What to expect when we get there
We arrive on time. We bring our supplies. We get to work.
You'll receive reminders before your appointment so there are no surprises on timing. If anything changes on our end, you'll hear from us before you're left wondering. That's just how we operate.
After your first clean, we'll follow up to make sure everything felt right. That call isn't a formality. It's how we confirm your cleaner is a good match for your home, whether you'd like to keep the same person, and whether anything should be adjusted for future visits.
For clients who move to a recurring schedule, that follow-up is also when we lock in your next appointment and make sure the rhythm works for your life.
🫧 A note on first cleans specifically
If this is your first time using our services, your first appointment will be a First - Time Deep Clean or a First - Time General Clean. No matter the level of service you’d like, this First - Time Clean will be a longer visit focused on getting your home to maintenance level. This is true whether you've booked a one-time clean, or you're starting a recurring maintenance schedule.
The reason is simple. A first clean brings your home up to the baseline that all future maintenance visits will maintain. Without it, a maintenance clean is trying to do two jobs at once and neither gets done as well as it should.
It's also honestly the best possible introduction to what a professional clean actually feels like. Walking through your home after a proper first clean, when everything has been addressed at once, is a different experience from any individual visit that follows. We want that to be your first impression of us.
If you're ready to book or want to know what to expect for your specific home, a quote takes about two minutes. We'll tell you exactly what the first visit covers and what to expect from there.
Or if you're still deciding, take a look at what our service packages include and find the one that fits your situation.
